RESOLUTION to Oppose SRS Plutonium Warhead Manufacturing

Whereas, the US Department of Energy has targeted the Savannah River Site for new atomic weapons manufacturing,

Whereas, DOE plans to produce 50 plutonium warheads at SRS, and an additional 30 at the Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico,

Whereas, atomic weapons manufacturing from the 1952 to 1989 resulted in radioactive contamination which is still being cleaned up,

Whereas, radioactivity around SRS is increasing,

Whereas, health impacts are getting worse, especially within 25 miles of SRS,

Whereas, nearly 2,000 excess cases of disease and death have occurred in the region.

Whereas, atomic weapon manufacturing is prohibited by international treaty

Therefore, be it resolved, that the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League opposes SRS becoming a plutonium warhead manufacturing plant.

And further, that we will seek and allocate resources to this task.
