PROPOSAL TO ABOLISH ZONING CALLED PLOY TO ALLOW NUCLEAR PLANT

Today at a press conference in Unicoi, citizens spoke out against the Town of Unicoi’s proposal to abolish zoning regulations, labeling it an attempt to silence public opposition to a nuclear plant.

Speaking on the town proposal to eliminate zoning, Dr. Rebecca Nunley said, “There is a clear connection between this resolution to abolish zoning and the proposed siting of a nuclear plant in the Town of Unicoi. It is wrong to manipulate the playing field in a way which puts all the power in the hands of one man.”

The Unicoi zoning ordinance was enacted in 1995 to protect the values of the community. Citizens accused special interests of unfair manipulation of the rules. Dr. Nunley added, “Proponents of the nuclear plant are trading our long-term growth and public health for the short-term profit of a few.”

CITIZENS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF VALLEY BEAUTIFUL was formed recently by residents of Unicoi County and nearby communities to oppose a uranium enrichment plant.
