Asphalt Plant stopped in Franklin, NC

BREDL chapter Neighbors Against the Cullasaja Asphalt Plant (NACAP) reports an Asphalt Plant was stopped in Franklin NC.

On March 09, 2000, the Environmental Management Commission voted to deny the air quality permit to Rhodes Brothers Paving Company who had placed a 1963 vintage (grandfathered in) asphalt plant in the floodplain of the Cullasaja River (Macon County), in the midst of many residences, including those of elderly, two schools, and on a dangerous curve of Scenic Highway 64.

The Commission denied the permit on grounds that there had not been a public hearing and no notice given to the local government.

NACAP and BREDL are very grateful to the EMC for listening to the people, and to all those who have worked so hard.
