Duke is shifting the costs of building new power plants onto families, small business and local governments. Duke Energy originally proposed a rate increase of 13.9% for residential users and rates that would grow by up to 10.7% for small to medium-sized businesses. A proposed settlement agreement between Duke and the Utilities Commissionís Public Staff could still hike household rates by 7% or more, and itís the third such increase in four years.
