Hearing on Plutonium Fuel
What: Public
Hearing on Plutonium Fuel
When:
Tuesday, May 8 at 6:00 to 10:00 PM
Where:
Charlotte, NC (directions below) We at Blue Ridge
Environmental Defense League urge all who read
this and who care about the future of this
community to attend this hearing!
On Tuesday, May 8,
citizens will have their first and maybe their
only opportunity to have a voice in a decision
about the planned use of dangerous plutonium
as a fuel in nuclear power
reactors near Charlotte and Rock Hill.
The plutonium would
come from dismantled nuclear weapons. The
reactors near Charlotte were not designed to use
plutonium; they use uranium. Plutonium fuel
would cause greater death and disease during a
reactor accident, and would make such an accident
more likely to happen.
The Nuclear
Regulatory Commission has scheduled this hearing
to get input from citizens in
preparation for its Environmental Impact
Statement on a plutonium fuel factory, a federal
project which would use weapons-grade
plutonium to create fuel for Duke Energy's
nuclear power plants.
The hearing will be
held at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government
Center on 600 East 4th Street. To get to
the hearing from I-77, take exit 10-A for Trade
Street, follow Trade Street through
downtown, turn right on McDowell St, turn right
on 4th Street.
